Talk Title: Creating the novel electronics required to measure Johnson noise accurately and make the world’s first practical primary and therefore drift free thermometer

Paul Bramley (St. John’s 1975) will share his experience of leaving the Engineering Department (part I Engineering part & part II EST) and working in industry, specifically developing a career in the control and instrumentation industry, including starting 2 businesses. The focus will be on his latest project to develop a new type of thermometer based in the measurement of Johnson noise, something that has been attempted many times but without success. The presentation will include demonstrations of conventional instrumentation capable of measuring to an accuracy of <8 µK (0.000008 °C) as well as the new Johnson noise thermometer. A Q&A session will follow and questions on electronics, business or career development will be welcome.

Metrosol plans to hire an electronics graduate in 2025. The successful candidate will spend several years learning how to design leading edge, mixed-signal electronics and will have the opportunity to become the technical lead for the business within a few years. They will have the opportunity to work with some of the world’s leading experts in temperature metrology. We are looking for someone who wants to develop a long term career in this exciting and challenging field.

Location: Engineering Department (LT TBC)

There will be food and drink and the opportunity to network with Paul Bramley following the event.
